The World Health Summit 2024, held from 13 to 15 October in Berlin, Germany, gathered health professionals, policymakers, scientists, and tech innovators to tackle global health challenges. This event not only sparked new ideas but also challenged existing perceptions and showcased innovative solutions. Thanks to the generous support of the Global Health Next Generation Network (GHNGN), I had the unique opportunity to immerse myself in a global exchange of ideas and innovation—an experience that left me both inspired and energised.
Challenging preconceived ideas
Before attending the Summit, I believed that technology could serve as a key solution for addressing major health issues. However, the discussions at the Summit both challenged and reinforced this view, presenting digital health solutions as a ‘silver bullet’ for tackling global health challenges. While digital health platforms like telemedicine and AI-based tools are undeniably valuable, particularly in regions with limited healthcare access, I began to realise that there was an overemphasis on technology as the ultimate solution. Not all communities have the necessary digital infrastructure or literacy levels to benefit from these advancements. The Summit highlighted efforts to bridge these gaps, and I was particularly excited to learn about innovations that were striving to make these solutions more inclusive.
Most impactful lesson: The Power of AI in Global Health
One of the most impactful lessons I took away was the power of AI in global health. The session, “Artificial Intelligence: A New Era in Digital Health,” demonstrated how AI is revolutionising healthcare by diagnosing, analysing medical images, and identifying patterns in patient data. An example that stood out was an AI tool designed for the early detection of tuberculosis in rural communities. This tool is expected to significantly reduce mortality rates and showcases the immense potential of AI in improving health outcomes. The session also underscored the need for systemic change to ensure these technologies are integrated into healthcare systems effectively.
Knowledge worth sharing with the public
A critical insight that I believe could have a transformative effect if widely understood is the intersection between health and climate change. While the direct effects of climate change on health, such as respiratory problems from pollution, are widely known, the Summit shed light on its broader implications—affecting mental health, food security, nutrition, and the spread of infectious diseases. Realising that health and climate change are inextricably linked can motivate broader public support for climate action. It’s not just about protecting the environment—it’s about our health, resilience, and quality of life. If the public recognises that actions like reducing waste, supporting sustainable agriculture, and voting for climate-conscious policies directly impact global health, we could spark a collective movement for positive change.
Applying lessons from the Summit to everyday life
The Summit also provided valuable insights into community health education, particularly in the realms of lifestyle and preventative health. It reinforced the importance of equitable access to digital health tools, especially in underserved communities. To make telehealth more accessible, I realised the importance of getting involved—whether through volunteering or partnering with organisations to support these efforts.
